A clinical and pathological study on sarcoma of oral and maxillofacial region


Abstract
A total of 67 cases of sarcome was obtained from Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, College of Dentistry, Seoul National University during a period of 21 years beginning from Jaunary 1971 to December 1991.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. Osteosarcoma was most frequent sarcoma(17), followed by Maliganant fibrous histiocytoma.(M.F.H.(10)), Chondrosarcoma(9), Angiosarcoma(8), Rhabomyosarcoma(7), Leiomyosarcoma(6), Fibrosarcoma(5), Ewing's sarcoma(3) and Liposarcoma(2).
2. Sarcomas were most prevalent before 4th decades. Average age of Osteosarcoma was 31.1 years.(M.F.H. -43.5, Chondrosarcoma -23.1, Angiosarcoma -49.5, Rhabdomyosarcoma -38.0, Leiomyosarcoma -50.5, Fibrosarcoma -32.4, Ewing's sarcoma -20.7)

the oral and maxillofacial region occurs most frequent in the third decade in man and second decade in woman.
3. Male : Female was 39 : 28.
4. The period from onset of sign and symptoms to initial diagnosis was within 3 months in the 53% of total cases.(cf. Over 3 years in 7 cases)
5. there was no difference between Mx and Mn. The most common site was posterior part of the maxilla and the body of the mandible.
6. In osetosarcoma, osteoblastic type(59%) was frequent, followed by chondroblastic(24%) and fibroblastic type(17%).

Rhabdomyosarcoma ; pleomorphic(57%)>embryonal(43%)
Chondroblastic ; chondrosarcoma(67%)>mesenchymal(33%)
Liposarcoma ; myxoid(100%)
7. The chief complanints of sarcoma patient were painful swelling and mass.
Pain was frequent in the maxilla and lymphadenopathy, tooth mobility, bleeding tendency, fetid odor and pathologic fracture in the mandible.
8. treatments of sarcomas were radical surgery (19 cases), local surgery (17 cases) radiotherapy (11 cases), chemotherapy (2 cases) and RND (2 cases).
